Aviation is an industry that thrives on experience, dedication, and a passion for flight. Over the years, many senior pilots have paid their dues, dedicating countless hours and effort to their craft, often receiving comparatively lower compensation. However, as new pilots enter the industry and secure positions with minimum flight time requirements, tensions can arise. Some junior pilots may express dissatisfaction or lack of appreciation for the opportunities they receive. In this article, we aim to address this generation gap and provide guidance on fostering understanding and collaboration between senior pilots and their junior counterparts. Regardless of how we got into the same cockpit together, we are there nevertheless and should do everything possible to make the day enjoyable.
Initiate conversations during crew briefings or downtime, where senior and junior pilots can openly discuss their experiences, challenges, and perspectives. Encourage questions and create a non-judgmental environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts. Actively listen to one another and seek clarification to ensure a deeper understanding of each other's viewpoints.
Example: Start a conversation by asking junior pilots about their journey into aviation and what motivates them. Share your own experiences and challenges, emphasizing how the industry has changed over time. This exchange of stories can foster understanding and empathy.
Acknowledge and appreciate the diverse paths that individuals take to enter the aviation industry. Understand that new pilots may have different backgrounds, training programs, or career opportunities. Avoid making assumptions based on these differences and focus on building camaraderie.
Example: When discussing career progression, ask junior pilots about the specific training programs they completed or the flight hours they accumulated. Share your own experiences and highlight how the industry has evolved in terms of opportunities and entry requirements. This exchange helps establish common ground and facilitates mutual respect.
